Hotline slot RTP, max win and UK stake rules explained

This guide gives Hotline's actual figures and the UK regulations that influence how the game is delivered to you. The Hotline slot RTP, max win and UK stake rules detailed here are based on NetEnt's official game page, Evolution's entry for the title and the Gambling Commission's released standards. Several pages ranking this game list figures that differ from the provider's.

The game in brief

NetEnt launched Hotline on 22 March 2018, with a theme based on neon and 1980s cop shows. The game features 30 lines, three rows and five reels.

You decide which of the three "Hotlines" to keep active. On these reels, a Wild expands, which triggers a Re-Spin. Seven Free Spins are triggered by three Scatters appearing on reels 1, 3 and 5. Most write-ups agree on these points, though they often disagree on the numbers.

Maximum win: 1,200x

Some pages suggest a peak win of 2,800x, while others suggest 60,000x. NetEnt's page doesn't show either figure, but gives the maximum payout as 1,200 times the bet. The provider creates the maths, so its figure is the one to use.

RTP depends on the version and on your Hotlines

NetEnt states 97.04%. Evolution provides two values, 96.13% and 97.04%.

A third-party review categorises the RTP based on the number of active Hotlines:

  • one Hotline: 96.13%
  • two Hotlines: 96.70%
  • three Hotlines: 97.04%

The provider pages don't display those three individual figures, so approach the middle one with some caution. The 96.13% to 97.04% range is confirmed.

Don't assume every site uses the same version. Operators must show the game rules and either the RTP or the chance of winning before you play, as required by the Gambling Commission. Look for the figure on the game's information screen.

The Commission also describes RTP as a designed return over the long term. Your return during a single session can differ widely from it.

How the Hotlines work

A single Hotline is active initially. Your bet level doubles if you activate a second one. Activating all three triples that level. NetEnt states that having more active Hotlines increases the likelihood of Re-Spins and Expanding Wilds.

Wilds replace all symbols other than Scatters. If a Wild hits an active Hotline:

  1. It fills the entire reel.
  2. It remains locked.
  3. It gives a Re-Spin.

Additional Wilds appearing on active Hotlines can give additional Re-Spins.

During the seven Free Spins, Wilds landing on active Hotlines expand and remain locked until the feature concludes. Extra Free Spins cannot be won.

The coin value, bet level, and Hotline configuration of the triggering spin apply to both Free Spins and Re-Spins. The stake selected at the start of the feature determines the entire feature.

How UK rules change Hotline

Operators with the proper Gambling Commission licence are allowed to offer online slots in Great Britain. These operators have to use the following rules for Hotline.

The stake cap ends the range at £5 or £2

Stakes are shown in euros on NetEnt's page, ranging from €0.15 to €450. The €450 upper limit is a general game setting and isn't a stake you can place in the UK.

According to stake-limit regulations (SI 2025/215), the maximum total stake for each online slot game cycle is:

  • £5 for those aged 25 or over (in force since 9 April 2025)
  • £2 for those aged 18 to 24 (in force since 21 May 2025)

The cap includes the total stake for the spin and the added cost of active Hotlines. Activating a second or third Hotline increases the bet level, so your total with all three active still can't exceed £5, or £2 if you're under 25.

The Hotline Bonus Bet is not a feature buy

The Commission has told operators to remove slot-style games allowing players to purchase entry into a feature. It found that buy-ins raised social-responsibility concerns and could push stakes up.

The page for Hotline mentions a Hotline Bonus Bet. This increases your stake to boost the likelihood of activating features. It doesn't allow you to purchase Free Spins directly. You must still hit the Scatters, and the increased stake has to remain within the £5 or £2 cap.

Spin speed and autoplay

Remote technical standards from the Commission mandate:

  • a minimum of 2.5 seconds between the beginning of one game cycle and the start of the following one
  • that each cycle begins with a new action by the player
  • no slam stop, quick spin or turbo
  • no autoplay for online slots

You personally start every paid spin of Hotline on a UK-licensed site.

The Commission considers a feature triggered by a base spin without an additional stake to be part of that particular game cycle. The seven Free Spins or a sequence of Re-Spins are part of the paid spin that started them. The rules on speed apply to the interval between paid spins.

Account limits and self-exclusion

The Commission requires UK-licensed operators to offer tools for setting financial limits and to prompt you to set one.

  • Deposit limits: operators must offer gross deposit limits starting from 30 September 2026. These are the only limits that may be termed "deposit limits", and they must be no less visible than any other financial limit.
  • Loss limits: operators may also offer these. They limit your stakes after subtracting winnings during a defined timeframe.

These limits apply to your account, not the rules of Hotline. Setting one before you play is a sensible way to ensure gambling stays within your means.

GAMSTOP is the national online self-exclusion scheme. If you register, you're blocked from apps and websites operated by gambling firms licensed in Great Britain for your chosen duration. All licensed operators must take part and must update their exclusion lists at least every 24 hours. Hotline isn't available to you on any licensed platform while your exclusion is active.
